Is your child school ready?

I can’t believe there’s only half a term left of this school year!! In my family, my eldest is due to leave school in a few weeks, and so it is going to be emotional ….!!😒

At this time of year, I am often asked by parents to see their children who are due to start school in September. Academic readiness often gets the spotlight, but speech and language development are foundational to school success.

By the time children are starting school, most are expected to:

  • be understood by unfamiliar adults most of the time
  • speak in clear, complete sentences
  • follow 2-3 step directions
  • retell events in order using basic story structure
  • ask and answer questions

Of course, children develop at different rates, but if your child is significantly delayed it may affect their confidence and participation in school.

If your child is not meeting expected milestones, struggling to make themselves understood or showing frustration when trying to communicate, it may be that they need some additional support.
